How to Play

  • Slide the tiles. Arrow keys or WASD, or swipe on a phone. Every tile slides as far as it can in that direction.
  • Merge matching tiles. Two tiles with the same number combine into one worth double — and add to your score.
  • Reach the target. Build up to the goal tile to win — then keep going for a higher score.
  • Don't fill the board. If no moves are left, the game ends. Plan ahead!

Use the arrow keys or swipe to slide tiles. Merge matching numbers to reach 2048.

About 2048

2048 is a free number puzzle game played on a sliding-tile grid. You move all the tiles in one direction at a time, and when two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one worth double. Combine 2s into 4s, 4s into 8s, and keep climbing until you build the legendary 2048 tile. It's an easy-to-learn, hard-to-master classic — and on WishnPlay you can play 2048 online instantly, with no download and no sign-up.

Choose your board on the start screen: the Classic 4×4 for the original challenge, a Relaxed 5×5 if you want more room to plan, or the brutal Tiny 3×3 for a fast, high-pressure run. Reach the target tile to win — then keep going for the highest score you can.

How to play 2048

  1. Slide all tiles up, down, left or right. Every tile shifts as far as it can in that direction.
  2. When two tiles show the same number and collide, they merge into a single tile of double the value and add to your score.
  3. After each move a new tile (a 2 or, occasionally, a 4) appears in a random empty cell.
  4. Plan your moves to keep big tiles together. Reach 2048 to win — or push past it for a record score.
  5. The game ends only when the board is full and no merges are possible.

Controls

2048 is built for both desktop and touch:

  • Arrow keys to slide the tiles.
  • W A S D WASD keys work too, if you prefer.
  • Swipe On a phone or tablet, swipe the board in any direction.
  • Undo Made a mistake? Tap Undo to take back your last moves.

2048 tips & tricks

  • Pick a corner and stay there. Keep your biggest tile pinned in one corner and build around it — never let it drift.
  • Use mostly two directions. Slide along one row/column toward your corner and avoid the opposite direction, which scatters your big tiles.
  • Build a chain. Line up tiles in descending order (2048, 1024, 512…) along an edge so they cascade-merge in one sweep.
  • Don't chase every merge. Keep the board tidy; small careless moves fill up empty cells you'll need later.
  • Think one move ahead. Before you swipe, picture where the new tile could land and whether you'll still have a move.
  • Undo to learn. Use the undo button to test a risky idea and see what would have happened.

Why is 2048 so popular?

2048 became a worldwide hit because it nails the “just one more go” feeling. The rules take five seconds to learn, yet reaching the 2048 tile demands real planning and patience. Every run is different, sessions are short and snackable, and that climbing score is endlessly addictive. It runs free in any browser on phone or desktop, needs no installation, and scratches the same itch as the best number and logic puzzles. Easy to start, genuinely tough to master — that's why 2048 has stayed a favourite for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

After every move that changes the board, one new tile spawns in a random empty cell — usually a 2, and occasionally a 4.

Yes. This version includes an Undo button so you can take back recent moves and rescue a tricky board.

The game is over only when the grid is completely full and there are no adjacent matching tiles left to merge in any direction.

Keep your largest tile locked in one corner, build a descending chain of tiles along that edge, and stick to two main swipe directions to avoid scattering the board.
