An ancient game with a lesson in it

Snakes and Ladders began in India as Moksha Patam, a board used to teach that good deeds lift you up and bad ones drag you down — the ladders were virtues and the snakes were vices. It came to Britain in the nineteenth century and has been a family favourite ever since. Its magic is that it levels everyone: a four-year-old can beat a grandparent, every game has comebacks, and nobody needs to learn anything to join in. How to play

How to play Snakes and Ladders

Everyone starts off the board. Take turns to roll the dice and move your counter that many squares.
Land on the foot of a ladder and climb straight up to the square at its top.
Land on a snake’s head and slide all the way down to its tail.
Roll a six and you get another go.
You must land exactly on 100 to win — roll too high and you stay where you are.

Tips & tricks

Tips for a better game of Snakes and Ladders

It really is luck — so pick the board. No strategy changes a dice roll, but the board you choose changes the whole game: Quick Climb for short games, Snake Pit for drama.
Use it to practise counting. For young children, counting the squares out loud before the counter moves turns every turn into a little maths lesson.
Play Pass & Play at the table. One phone in the middle means no lost counters and nobody arguing about whose turn it is.
Watch the 90s. The last row is where the longest snakes hide — the tension of needing an exact roll is half the fun.
Try it against the computer first. A quick game against the computer is a good way to show a new player how the snakes and ladders work.
