Why FreeCell is the thinking player’s solitaire

FreeCell became famous when it shipped with Windows in the 1990s, and players soon discovered something remarkable: almost every deal can be won. Of the original 32,000 numbered deals, only one — the infamous #11982 — has no solution. That makes FreeCell different from Klondike or Spider: when you lose, it’s because you missed the path, not because the cards were against you. It’s the perfect FreeCell card game for a calm, focused ten minutes — and One Cell mode will test even seasoned players.

How to play FreeCell Solitaire

The goal: move all 52 cards onto the four foundations, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
In the eight columns, build down in alternating colours — a red 6 on a black 7.
Each free cell holds any one card. Park a card there to reach what’s underneath.
Any card can go into an empty column.
You can move a run of cards at once — as many as your empty cells and columns allow: (free cells + 1), doubled for every empty column.

Tips & tricks

FreeCell strategy: how to win more deals

Plan before you move. Everything is visible, so look for where the Aces and 2s are buried and work out how to dig them out.
Keep free cells free. Every card parked in a cell reduces how many cards you can move at once. Use them as a last resort, and empty them quickly.
Empty a column early. An empty column is worth more than any free cell — it doubles the size of the run you can move.
Don’t rush cards to the foundations. A low card in a column can still be a useful place to build on. Send it up when nothing needs it.
Undo freely. A FreeCell deal is a puzzle — backing up and trying another line is part of solving it.
