From Shanghai to the Daily Mahjong

The tiles come from the four-player Chinese game of Mahjong, but the single-player version — sometimes called Mahjongg or Shanghai Solitaire — was created for home computers in the 1980s and has been a favourite ever since. It’s the ideal Mahjong puzzle for a quiet break: no timer pressure, beautiful tiles, and that satisfying moment when the last two tiles come away. How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Find two identical tiles and click them both to remove the pair.
You can only take a free tile: nothing on top of it, and its left or right side open.
Any flower matches any other flower, and any season matches any season.
Clear every tile from the board to win.

The tiles: Dots, Bamboo and Characters numbered 1–9, the four Winds, the red, green and white Dragons, and the Flowers and Seasons.

Tips & tricks

Mahjong Solitaire strategy

Open the long rows first. Tiles at the ends of the longest rows block the most — freeing them opens up the board.
Clear the top layers. The tiles stacked in the middle of the Turtle hide a lot underneath. Unstack them early.
Think before taking an easy pair. If three of a kind are free, choose the two that free the most other tiles.
Watch the fourth tile. When all four copies of a tile are visible, you can match them in any order. When two are buried, pick carefully.
Use Free tiles view. Dimming the blocked tiles makes the real choices jump out.
